Taira Malaney

Director and Editor

Taira is a director and editor from Goa, India. She received her BA in psychology in 2013 at Occidental College in L.A., after which she moved to the Andaman and Nicobar islands to work with Reefwatch Foundation, a marine conservation organization. There, she hosted regular film screenings to teach students about the marine world. Their positive response to this teaching method gave her insight into the power of film. After completing a documentary film course at the San Francisco School of Digital Filmmaking in 2016, she founded Emaho Films. Today she is driven by the idea that emotional stories exploring the bonds between humans and wildlife can be used to create powerful impact.

Taira was a fellow at the Jackson Wild Media Lab in 2019. Her previous short films, A Living Legacy (2017) and The Call Of Pashmina (2018) have been nominated at film festivals in the US, Australia, India, Canada and Europe. Her first feature film, The Turtle Walkers, has been awarded 'Best Natural History and Wildlife' pitch at Sunny Side of the Doc 2019 and the 'Emerging Filmmaker Award' at DocEdge 2019. The film is currently in production.
